About
**Emmett Rooke**, 48, a self-employed heating engineer of twenty-two years, was arrested at his own front door at ten past one the following morning and has been on remand ever since. He is not a violent man and there is no history of it anywhere. He was in a different house at the time and has never been able to account for the forty minutes between a telephone call he made at 9. 48 and a call his wife made from a doorstep at 11. 41 the same night. **Nell Rooke**, 46, is the woman he married in 2004, and she is the Crown's only identifying witness. Paragraph fourteen of her witness statement contains one sentence: that the man who was standing in Marisol Kanter's kitchen at twenty past ten on the twenty-second of July was Emmett Rooke, and he was her husband, and she knew him as well as she knew her own hands. Everything else in the case is circumstantial. The boots, the tagged van seen
