About
It is fed by one spring at the head and nothing else. In August the air at Cwmorthin is twenty-nine degrees and the lake is fourteen, and it has not been warmer than fourteen point four in living memory, because the spring arrives in April at a temperature the mountain does not negotiate with. Cerys Vaughan, 34, is a marine welder at Y Porth in Tremadog and Rhys Hollings, 31, is a respiratory physiologist who cannot stop climbing hills about his own breathing. They have rented Tŷ'r Cerrig, a quarryman's cottage on the north shore, for four weeks. On Sunday 6 July they agreed out loud, once, in that kitchen, that they are going in off the north slip on the last Sunday of August at nine o'clock and neither of them is coming up. The words have not been revised since. They are restated on the first page and after that neither of them says them again. On Saturday 2 August they tried it once.
