Holding Tension

Two of the three fibre cables serving Orsena fail ninety minutes apart. The island has 240,318 people, one ageing link still alive and thirty days before that link must be derated. The cable ship Meridian sails from Valletta with forty-one crew, a charter bill of €112,000 a day and six weeks to find two faults in more than eight hundred metres of water. Mara Venn, forty-six, is the ship's cable engineer. She chooses where to grapple, accepts every splice and signs the repair report. She has spent ten years at sea after a shore acceptance test she agreed never to discuss. She wants good glass, controlled tension and no opinion about what cut the cables. The first recovered end refuses that arrangement: square compression marks, blue hydraulic oil and a numbered tag from a recovery vehicle operated by the consortium's own contractor. Captain Elias Rook owns the crew's safety. Nell Adebayo, the bosun who taught half the Mediterranean to handle armoured cable, is retiring after this charter. Luc Morel, the client representative, needs an anchor finding because €11.8 million of insurance depends on it and would finance a protected fourth route. On Orsena, regulator Irena Sayegh counts bandwidth in scans, payroll files and emergency calls. Every one of them has a defensible reason to spend Mara's signature. Holding Tension is an adult maritime procedural about six weeks of exact work after the mystery is already solved. Grapnel runs, electrical shunts, recovered ends, fibre loss, weather windows and final bights all become choices with human costs. Eighteen branch points and five endings separate the quality of the repair from the truth of its report. A joint can be good while the cause line lies. A report can be true while the cable beneath it fails.
