About
Sena Varda is the senior interpreter at the tribunal for the Vaskaran Corridor, and the only person in the room who hears both languages. Vaskaran marks causation on the verb: one inflection covers he allowed it, he failed to prevent it, and he brought it about. Court Standard has no such form. Every time a witness uses it, Sena must pick one — aloud, on the record, in three seconds — and the daily transcript publishes at seven. The accused is Colonel Iman Rask, who commanded the corridor during the clearances and who, eleven years ago, signed the permit that put Sena's family in a car. He calls her by a kinship term the court hears as affection and she hears as an invoice. The witness whose testimony holds the command chain together will not simplify her own sentences, because being told what her words meant is what was done to her for eleven years. Your choices are translation choices. Each rendering is defensible on its own; the transcript in aggregate is not. The endings differ in who was believed, not in who won — and one of them costs Sena the person she was trying to protect, precisely because she protected her.
