About
Europa, 2117. Kepler Station is a thirty-person drill camp buried beneath twelve metres of radiation shielding and balanced over nineteen kilometres of ice. Its workers bought passage with debt and sold nine years of their lives to one narrow promise: reach liquid water, certify it sterile, collect 18.6 million Earth credits. Dr Ifeoma Adaeze, the camp's chief hydrologist, has kept Bore K-19 alive for two years. When its first deep brine capsule rises, she watches colourless compartments gather, fold and divide after the microscope lamp goes dark. If they are alive, the discovery is historic. It is also a contractual catastrophe. Red Containment closes every pressure door. The lease voids, the return manifest freezes, and advances signed against the payout remain due. Before Ifeoma can secure the raw record, she learns that Ravi Menon—her deputy, closest friend and witness on the sample chain—has spent eleven months sending Helix sanitised summaries. He has also signed a statement naming her as the contaminant. Now thirty indebted adults must decide whether the thing beneath them is life, bad sterilisation or a mineral trick, knowing their sworn vote will travel with the evidence. One of them will not survive to cast a ballot. Two people ask Ifeoma for truths that cannot coexist. Sergey Volkov, the drill boss she has loved in the practical grammar of shared shifts, needs the find disproved before his crew's bonuses and families collapse. Commander Hana Yun, Kepler's contract officer, is legally obliged to report any credible biosignature and personally responsible for keeping its chain intact. Love with Sergey may require burying the bore; love with Hana may require sending the message that strands them. Around them: radiation badges turning red, hips thinning in low gravity, an illegal ration threat, a suicide, a hull breach and the last viable sample in a drawer that can be opened only once. The Hollow Below is an adult literary science-fiction drama about indenture dressed as opportunity, fraud practiced as mutual aid, and evidence that belongs to everyone until it costs them. Fourteen branch points and seven materially different endings turn on what can be proved, what can be afforded and who is allowed to name survival.
