Dr Ifeoma Adaeze, the camp's chief hydrologist, has kept Bore K-19 alive for two years. When its first deep brine capsule rises, she watches colourless compartments gather, fold and divide after the microscope lamp goes dark. If they are alive, the discovery is historic. It is also a contractual catastrophe. Red Containment closes every pressure door. The lease voids, the return manifest freezes, and advances signed against the payout remain due. Before Ifeoma can secure the raw record, she learns that Ravi Menon—her deputy, closest friend and witness on the sample chain—has spent eleven months sending Helix sanitised summaries. He has also signed a statement naming her as the contaminant. Now thirty indebted adults must decide whether the thing beneath them is life, bad sterilisation or a mineral trick, knowing their sworn vote will travel with the evidence. Commander Hana Yun, Kepler's contract officer, is legally obliged to report any credible biosignature and personally responsible for keeping its chain intact.
