In Cauldmere, law lives under the skin. Speak a specific promise before a sealed adept and a silver oathmark closes around your forearm. Break it and the mark turns black, collecting the forfeit written into the bargain: taste, a hand, a year, a life. Nine Binding Houses insure the republic's promises, and Sera Vandelich is the Ninth House's finest drafter. At thirty-seven, she has priced thousands of other people's freedoms while keeping her own arm bare—or so she believes. When the shipping empire Pell & Gant fails, 1,843 dockworkers miss shifts that their service oaths will not forgive. Black marks spread across Bell Quay. Clinics fill with bodies whose contracts are taking payment, grain ships wait outside an uninsured harbor, and a strike seals the riverfront. In the buried schedules Sera recognizes her own private drafting language. Her mentor Halvard has used it to bind the workers, protect the House, and turn an apprentice oath she never knew she swore into a covenant of silence. Reading the truth may free her. Speaking it may take her voice first. Two people offer kinds of love that cannot remain clean. Iven Marr is the physician amputating what broken oaths take, dependent on the sedative that steadies him, and willing to collapse the credit system if it ends debt bondage. Teodora Vale is the magistrate-adept who sealed the dock compact and spent most of her sight doing it; she can void the master seal, but the law will charge the rest of her vision. Between them stand a strike leader who knows hunger makes cowards of principles, an oath-bound mother whose offscreen newborn is free only on paper, and a Factor who can count exactly how many citizens sudden justice might starve. The Binding House is an adult literary drama of contract law as bodily violence: wet rope, surgical linen, auctioned debt, a hidden mercy cellar, and intimacy that cuts away at the door. Twelve branch points and seven endings ask not whether the city can be saved, but whose body will be entered in the ledger as its price.
