About

Potosí, Upper Peru, 1585. At four thousand metres, breath is dear and silver is cheap enough to pave an empire's road. Cerro Rico consumes drafted Indigenous men by the week; the refineries below consume mercury hauled from Huancavelica. When the mercury train runs short, the Crown's answer is arithmetic: double the active mita labour and demand the same silver from exhausted bodies. Inés Quispe Callao survives between those columns. She buys ore, leases a refinery from a Spanish widow, translates for captains and owners, and owes thirty-six assay marks she cannot produce. Then her cousin Tomás brings her a death-book already filled. Men assigned to Inés have been sold to a richer mill and recorded as dead in her most dangerous galleries. Tomás has collected their hidden wages and expects her signature. One mark of ink could preserve the lease, protect their kin from immediate punishment, and erase living people so completely that only a baptism folio would remember them. Refusal exposes Inés to foreclosure and prison—and hands her crews to owners with cleaner books and dirtier yards. A collapse inside a worked-out gallery turns the fraud from an account into a rescue measured in failing air, unpaid hands, and timbers nobody wants to finance. The people who love Inés possess different forms of power and neither can spend it safely. Father Bernal keeps the parish death-book honest, knowing the Church will abandon him before it surrenders its records. Úrsula de Loaysa owns Inés's mill and outranks her in every room, yet needs Inés's skill and wants her behind a door the city must never see closed. Around them, a coca seller hunts for her living husband, a royal visitor makes a devastatingly correct case for bad law, and poisoned workers learn what their wages have already cost. This is an adult historical tragedy about forced labour, institutional rot, bodies converted into money, and records that can both save and condemn. Desire remains at the threshold; its aftermath enters the ledger. Six endings ask not whether the mountain can be defeated, but which account of its hunger a person can bear to leave true.
