Tlatelolco, 1473. Dawn brings canoes, porters, judges, cooked maize, bright feathers, black glass and the hard little sound of cacao beans being counted. Xoco is thirty-four, widowed, and running the long-distance merchant outfit her husband left behind. Its wealth is carried on human backs and its true value lies in news: which road is closed, which town is hungry, which lord is buying shields. When market inspectors condemn eleven of Xoco's weights, the fine threatens to turn Malin, her porter and debtor, into somebody else's property. The judge hearing the case is Tepin, the person Xoco trusts most and the one person who cannot save her without corrupting the court they serve. The bad weights are only the first account to come due. Itzcoatl, her husband's indispensable second, has spent four years reporting the outfit's routes to Tenochtitlan. His information taxed Xoco's last caravan to nothing; now it is helping the twin city price an invasion. Across the causeway, Ollin, a Tenochca canal engineer and Xoco's other dangerous tenderness, receives orders to drain the approaches to the market. He knows exactly which poor wards will flood if he resists and exactly how many soldiers will enter if he obeys. Above them, Tlatelolco's ruler Moquihuix converts merchant grievance, public sacrifice and marital humiliation into a war he cannot afford, while a tribute commissioner makes the enemy's best argument with a clean ledger. Over forty days, a court case becomes a spy hunt, a love triangle becomes a choice about public duty, and a city's independence is reduced to terms that can be carried in one folded tribute cloth. Xoco must decide whether evidence is worth more as truth or leverage, whether a person can be bought free without buying somebody else, and what a merchant owes the streets that made her rich. Desire stays in glances, wet footprints and the morning after a closed door; violence arrives with consequence. The war's broad result is history. Who is warned, who is owned, who keeps the market books, and whose hand closes over Xoco's when the stalls reopen are not.
