About
2103, cislunar space, nine months into a war between the authority that owns the traffic lanes and the combines that own the water. Combat here is artillery with an audience: a tank of remass, a radiator, a rail launcher, and one person on a couch for eleven hours. Engagements open at forty thousand kilometres and are decided in the first three minutes by whoever spent their delta-v better. The shooting lasts four seconds. The burn home takes two days, and if you got the sums wrong you spend those two days watching your own radiator glow. Wren Adeoye flies Sundog Two: eleven engagements, four confirmed, one of them a mistake she never reported. She grew up on a combine habitat and holds her citizenship by service, which makes her the squadron's designated explainer of the enemy. Her wing leader has been her partner for a year and is the best pilot she has ever seen at the only thing that matters, which is knowing when not to burn. Their major plans every intercept from a couch he is medically barred from using, and is the one officer in the theatre who will say aloud what the target packages actually are. A hard-vacuum war story with real orbital mechanics and no dogfights: burn budgets, radiator management, four-second engagements, and the specific bureaucracy of a target package. The turns are documentary — what the confirmed kills were, who was on the ferry, and a legally sound argument for shooting at a farm ring with nine thousand people behind it. Desire is frank and closes the door. Five endings; refusing the order is available in three of them and costs something different each time.
