About
Two rooms, a filing cabinet, a kettle, and a ledger of other people's county court judgments. It buys paper nobody else wants, at eleven pence in the pound, and it collects slowly. Ada Okonjo, 29, draws buildings for a firm whose site closes in April. On the sixteenth of March a letter says her late father's debt has been assigned to Vane & Co and that the sum is eighty-four thousand pounds. There is a signature on the guarantee from the fourteenth of August 2019, and she does not remember the pen, and that is the whole case against her. Elias Vane, 38, owns the debt. He does not send a bailiff and he does not issue a writ. He offers a schedule: eight per cent, five hundred and sixty pounds a month, interest first, capital only if there is any. It is a fair instrument and it never ends. Ada can sign it, or let the county court fee of four thousand two hundred pounds be spent and take her
