About
1591, the Niger bend. Fadimata walad Bakr runs the spring caravan: eight hundred slabs of salt cut at the northern pans, seventeen days south to Timbuktu, weighed against gold on a beam scale while she watches the beam. She knows eleven wells and four of them are on no road a stranger would recognise as a road. In March an army crosses the desert with firearms the Songhai cavalry has never faced and ends the empire in an afternoon, and overnight the most valuable skill in the western world is moving weight across sand on time. Her husband of eleven years is a cavalry captain who was at that battle. The scholar who owes her money has four hundred manuscripts and a well-founded certainty that the new administration will take every one of them. And the invaders' quartermaster — a renegado from Andalusia, courteous, literate, homesick for a city that expelled his family — is now the man who buys her salt, pays cash, and has an offer. He makes it twice. The second time he tells her what is actually in the sacks. A desert logistics epic that is also a marriage, a scholar's rescue, and an occupation: well by well, load by load, in gold weights and days of water. The turns are not swords but contracts and routes, and the betrayal that matters is a route sold by someone with a good reason. Desire is frank and closes the door; violence is sudden, brief and graphic. Five endings, and in each of them something crosses the desert and something is left in it.
