About
Nils Sarri, 34, is the understudy. He has been in that building for sixty-three days. He has not been on. He knows every beat of Petrin's part, all two hundred and eleven pages of it, in the original Hungarian and in the 1971 English that nobody has ever liked, and the part is his for thirty-six consecutive nights from the twelfth of November and he is going to be told that on Monday. Yvette Maartens, 52, is directing, and she is sleeping with Marta Keijser, 41, who is married to Aurelio Vance, 47, who is playing Petrin. Marta teaches voice at the Netherfold College of Music and she spends Wednesday and Thursday afternoons thirty metres from the stage Nils understudies, and Nils has been sleeping with her since the ninth of March. That is eight months and three days on the night it matters. Yvette has been sleeping with her since the fourth of July. Neither of them knows about the other
