Konrad Wiesner, 44, is the forecaster. Dora Wiesner, 41, is his wife and the station's other observer, and she is eleven weeks out of a knee reconstruction and cannot stand the wall of a snow pit without going down on both knees. Between them they have filed four thousand readings, twice a day, in a five-digit code that the regional avalanche service reads at Linden, forty-one kilometres away and nine hundred metres lower. Eleven years ago this morning, on 14 February, Konrad dug a pit at 2,610 metres on the north-north-east facing slope called the Aubach. New snow of forty-one centimetres over a wind slab.
