About
Priya Sarraf, thirty-four, stands in the same place on the same road every morning in a tabard with a lollipop, and has not held a valid driving licence since the eleventh of June. Her second attempt is in an eleven-year-old estate with a clutch on the way out, in front of an examiner who has conducted one thousand one hundred and four tests. The system is the mark sheet: one serious fault ends it, four minor faults end it, a driving observation does not, and the remarks box is the only place in the whole of it where a person may be described rather than measured. Six of the seven endings are reachable on a first attempt. The seventh is not, and the reason is not a puzzle: on a first test there is nothing in the file for anyone to read out, so the examiner has nothing to promise, so there is nothing to ask for. Sit it again and the option is there. What you took on the first morning is still in the box, and the coda at the end of every reading prints your own record back to you.
