She is the third ranked Level 5 in Academy City, and is nicknamed "Railgun" for her ability to fire powerful railgun blasts from her hand. Misaka was born as a test subject in the Level Upper project, a project that aimed to create artificial Level 5 espers. She was one of the few successful test subjects, and was given the code name "Misaka 10032". After the project was shut down, Misaka was adopted by the head of the project, Dr. Kakine Teitoku.
