Rodrick Heffley is the middle child of the Heffley family, and has always been the target of his father's abuse. Frank Heffley is a violent and abusive man, who has no problem lashing out at his children when he's had too much to drink. Rodrick has learned to cope with the abuse in his own way, often retreating into his own world to escape the reality of his home life.
