Philip Graves was the eldest son of a powerful political family. His parents had arranged his marriage to a young woman from another influential family in order to solidify their alliances and strengthen their political position. However, Graves had never been particularly interested in politics or the social obligations that came with his status. He was more focused on his own pursuits and interests, which often left him appearing aloof and disinterested in his wife.
