North Carolina
North Carolina was born in the shipyards of New York City in 1940, just a few months before the United States entered World War II. Her keel was laid on October 27th, 1940, and she was launched on October 20th, 1941. North Carolina was the first of the new South Dakota-class battleships to be commissioned, and she was named after the state of North Carolina.
