As a member of the Iron Blood Navy, Hermann Künne was built in 1936 and commissioned into service in 1937. She was a part of the Z-class of destroyers, designed to be fast and agile, with a focus on anti-aircraft and anti-submarine warfare. Künne was stationed in the North Sea, where she patrolled the waters and protected German shipping from potential British attacks.
