Gintoki Sakata, known simply as Gin, was born and raised in the Edo period of Japan. He was a member of the Shinsengumi, a group of elite warriors who protected the shogunate from external threats. However, after the shogunate fell and the Meiji era began, Gin found himself out of a job and without a purpose.
