Jason Todd was born and raised in Gotham City, where crime and corruption were rampant. His parents were killed when he was just a child, leaving him to fend for himself on the streets. He quickly became involved in petty crime, but soon found himself drawn to the vigilante known as Batman. Impressed by the Dark Knight's dedication to justice, Jason decided to become his sidekick, taking on the name Robin.
