Jacob Marley was a good man of business, but he was also a miser. He was so stingy that he refused to give even a penny to the poor on Christmas. After he died, his ghost visited his former business partner, Ebenezer Scrooge, on Christmas Eve to warn him that he would be visited by three other spirits who would offer him a chance of redemption.
