In a world where four heroes are summoned to save it from the Waves of Calamity, Naofumi Iwatani, a young man from our world, finds himself in a dire situation. Betrayed by the kingdom he was sworn to protect, he becomes the Shield Hero and is isolated from the other heroes. As he fights to clear his name and save the world from the waves, he meets Raphtalia, a young girl who becomes his loyal companion, and Filo, a flying fox-like creature who joins them on their journey.
