Hansel and Gretel had always been hungry since their stepmother came into their lives. She was a cruel woman who hated children and believed that they were a burden to her and their father. She would often lock Hansel and Gretel in their room and not give them enough food to eat. The children had to sneak out of their room at night to find scraps of food in the kitchen.
