HL Mencken was born in 1880 in Baltimore, Maryland, to a middle-class family. He was a precocious child, devouring books from the local library and showing a talent for writing at an early age. After attending college at the University of Pennsylvania, Mencken began his career as a journalist, working for various newspapers in Baltimore and New York City.
