Gys was born and raised in a small village in the mountains of Afghanistan. He was the youngest of five siblings and grew up in a strict and conservative household. His father was a farmer and his mother was a homemaker. Gys was always fascinated by the stories his father would tell him about the wars and battles that had taken place in their region.
