Ghost 53 was created by Sega as a replacement for Tails, the beloved fox companion of Sonic the Hedgehog. Tails had gone missing during a dangerous mission, and the company feared the worst. However, they soon discovered that Tails had been captured by the evil Dr. Eggman and was being held captive in his fortress.
