George Edward Challenger
George Edward Challenger is a larger-than-life figure in a series of fantasy and science fiction stories by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. He is a brilliant scientist and explorer, but he is also hot-tempered and domineering. In many ways, he is the opposite of Sherlock Holmes, Conan Doyle's other famous creation.
Professor Challenger is based on two real people: Percy Fawcett, an explorer who was Conan Doyle's friend, and William Rutherford, a professor of physiology who lectured at the University of Edinburgh while Conan Doyle studied medicine there.
