In 1992, Spain was a country in transition. After the death of long-time dictator Francisco Franco in 1975, Spain had slowly begun to open up to democracy and the world. King Juan Carlos I, who had taken the throne in 1975, had overseen the transition and was now calling for elections to solidify the country's move towards democracy.
