Folk Horror. Blackglass in February Mara Venn arrived at Blackglass Resort on the last night of the ski season, carrying a black medical bag and a brass thermometer that froze despite her coat. The village stood beneath a white ridge, its houses closed like clenched mouths....
Speculative Fiction. First Floor, No Sky At dusk, the market unfurled beneath the city like a red wound. There was no street below the first floor. The city began on broad stone terraces and climbed from there, its foundations sealed by old laws and newer concrete. Beneath the...
Surrealism. The Last Departure Board Mara arrived at Vinter Station wearing her old pressure suit beneath a wool coat. The suit had not been pressurised for eleven years, but she kept its sealed helmet under one arm, a green stone in the other hand. The stone had been warm when...
Speculative Fiction. The Measuring Line At dusk, Mara Venn lowered her silver spoon into the river and waited for the current to trouble its surface. The border town of Silt Bell divided at the water: the old quarter on the rust-red bank, the new quarter on the charcoal bank,...
Surrealism. The Building That Knew Tomorrow Every apartment in 853 kept a different tomorrow. The child in 851 could recall the exact weather of his eighteenth birthday. Mrs. Vale in 857 remembered the argument she would have with a man not yet born. On the seventh floor,...
Fantasy. The Lake at the Wrong Hour Orren had learned the lake by its absences. At high water, it was only a blue depression between the garden’s black beds, reflecting cloud-white sky. At low tide, when the bronze weeds bent outward and the drowned stairs revealed their green...
Adventure. The Bell at the Museum Door Mara Venn made bells for memories people had not yet owned. They came up the two flights to her workshop on Copper Street with coins in a jar and a story they were not yet sure they wanted. She cast the bronze, engraved no name, hung the...
Weird Fiction. The Station Between Days At four in the afternoon, the saffron sun sank into the hills behind Silt Halt, and the train arrived without a sound. Mara was the station’s only courier. She had a grey uniform, a brass badge, and a bicycle with a bent rear fender. The...
Hopeful Science Fiction. The Note Under the Dish At dawn, the observatory cast a lavender shadow across the wet asphalt. Sera played the old harmonium beneath the stars, its notes traveling farther than the radio silence. The instruments translated stellar pulses into sound:...
Magical Realism. The Gardener of Empty Courts On the third terrace of the comet monastery, where the chapel's stone leaned inward as though listening to something out past the shoulder of the world, Mara Venn pruned the last winter from a courtyard nobody used. The courtyard...
Gothic Fantasy. The Lamplighter’s Passage The archive had drowned so gracefully that the books still obeyed the old order. Their spines floated above the water in white coral ranks. Between them, librarians rowed black skiffs, calling shelf numbers to one another like birds...
Historical Fantasy. The Blue Suitcase At dawn, when the iron bells above Saint Orra rang seven times, the shadows left their citizens. They slid from doorways, market stalls, and rain-dark roofs, each wearing the clothes of the person it belonged to. They bowed to the...
Fairy-Tale Fiction. The Village in the Giant’s Ribs At dusk, the village of Ossa appeared between the ribs of a sleeping giant, its chimneys tucked beneath the old white arches and its lanes shining with cold moonlight. People hung lanterns from the curved bones overhead. They...
Mystery. The Film That Had Not Happened By the time Mara Vale inherited the old Astor Cinema, its screen still played futures that had nearly happened. Rain-slicked cities floated above drowned fields. A woman in silver armor stood before a palace with no doors. Once, every...
Mythic Fiction. The Dry River Mara Venn inherited her father's brass spoon, her mother's salt cellar, and a legend her grandmother had guarded like a sleeping flame. The family had once fed the river itself, the story said, and received a promise in return: whenever the river...
Romance. The Country on Her Hand Mara first noticed the country when she burned her palm over a faulty seal. She was apprenticed to Elian, the monastery’s cartographer, in a country whose rivers changed direction between noon and dusk. Its people measured days by meals,...
Science Fiction. The Patient Beneath the Water Dr. Iona Vale treated homesickness the way other physicians treated fever: by asking where the pain had begun, and then by refusing to let the patient keep returning to the same room. Her clinic occupied the lantern room of an old...
Romance. What the Machines Dreamed On the third orbit above Veyr, inside a greenhouse built around a seed that remembered the ash forests, Mara Venn woke to a machine whispering in her teeth. She was a translator of sleeping systems: irrigation pumps, climate lattices, seed...
Folk Horror. The Catalogue of Returning Things At the harbor, the old archivist kept a ledger beneath a window painted with salt clouds. Every morning the sea returned what the town had lost: a brass thimble, a child's shoe, a tooth in a twist of seaweed, a silver button...
Folk Horror. The theatre of discarded endings By the time Mara Venn returned to Earth, the sea had stopped behaving like a map. It lay beyond the black windows of the orbital elevator, folded into a silver argument, while the continents below wore names that no longer agreed...
Fantasy. At low tide, the lake came out from under the theatre. It arrived without waves, a violet sheet folding itself between the black pilings. The water smelled of wet stone and hot metal. Along the shore stood the theatre’s forgotten stage, its copper roof split open to...
Speculative Fiction. The Mountain That Kept Still At dawn, Mara Venn climbed into the observatory with a silver spoon in one hand and a salt jar in the other. The observatory was cut into the caldera’s north wall, a black chamber opening toward a valley where snow lay thin as...
Surrealism. The Market of Unclaimed Things Mara found the market at the hour when rain hangs before falling. It floated above a drowned valley, held aloft by hundreds of tethered umbrellas and the slow breath of a white animal no larger than a sleeping cat. Stalls leaned...
Weird Fiction. The Door in the Bicycle Wheel Mara's bicycle had one advantage over every other courier in Bellwether: its front wheel could pass through a door before the door knew it was there. She rode through markets that appeared only after rain, through kitchens asleep...
