Mythic Fiction. The Monastery Without Hours At the Monastery of Patient Hours, no clock showed the same time twice. The monks wound bronze mechanisms beneath the sand-colored cloisters and waited for them to decide what the world should become. One chimed into rain. Another...
Mystery. The market above the drowned forest Mara Vell had been born in the year the forest was removed from time. The trees were still there, black-barked and enormous, standing inside bell-glass domes the government had raised from the north after the first evacuations. But...
Science Fiction. The Lake That Waited At the end of the railway, past the frozen orchards and the abandoned ski lifts, stood Bellwether Resort, a collection of steep-roofed houses painted the red-brown of old terracotta. The guests arrived in January, when the lake was there....
Folk Horror. The Door Between Timetables On the coldest morning of the year, Mara found a green stone on Platform 908. It was smooth as a river mouth and warm beneath her glove. The station clock stood at 4:17, though noon had passed without its hands moving. Frost silvered the...
Speculative Fiction. The House on the Wrong Bank At midnight, the river turned backward. Maren stood on the iron stair of her house and watched the current reverse beneath the bridge, hauling black water toward the eastern hills. Boats scraped against their moorings. Wet sand...
Surrealism. The Memory of Unbuilt Rooms On the ninth floor of the Ardent Apartments, every window faced tomorrow. The residents could remember breakfast they had not eaten, reunions they had not earned, and the exact expressions of people who had not yet been born. They never...
Weird Fiction. The Train from Thursday At four in the afternoon, saffron light lay across the desert station like a sheet of beaten gold. The tracks shone plum-dark in the distance. Smoke-grey air gathered beneath the roof, smelling of hot metal and rain that had never fallen....
Hopeful Science Fiction. Signal 902 On the last night of her working life, Inez Vela spread a map across the observatory floor and drew a door. She drew it in the empty place between two vanished lakes, using the black ink reserved for coastlines that had been swallowed by sand....
Magical Realism. The Book of Unfinished Rooms Mara kept the museum in the basement of an old customs house, beneath a ceiling painted midnight blue. Thirty-seven doors stood in rows along the walls, each one breathing a different weather when opened. Copper smelled of rain....
Mythic Fiction. The Season-Sleepers Orin rowed between shelves that rose from the green water like drowned cathedrals. Above him, paper floated beneath the cobalt shadow of the vaulted ceiling. Below, silver fish threaded between submerged books, their spines flashing when the...
Magical Realism. The Night Watch At the edge of the desert, where the mountains looked like folded pieces of iron, Nara kept an observatory for stars that sent messages. From the roof she watched the dishes turn beneath the pearl sky, their silver bowls gathering light from...

Surrealism. The Country Without a Morning At the monastery of clockmakers, no one owned a watch. The walls held thousands of them, each behind a glass door, each keeping a different hour. Some advanced in patient increments. Some trembled at midnight. One had no hands and chimed...
