Speculative Fiction. Shadows at the Lift At Veyr Mountain, shadows arrived before the guests. They crossed the frozen approach beneath the funicular, slipped through locked doors, and waited beside steaming cups in the dining room while guests hurried in from the dark,...
Surrealism. Planting in the Ash Mira had been appointed municipal gardener of Caldera Ridge for eleven years, though the title described a woman paid to prevent the mountain from swallowing its own history. She tended the old observatory’s heat gardens: stone beds of silver...
Weird Fiction. The Book of Previous Borrowers By day, Orra’s library occupied the saffron wall above Mirren Stair, between a pawnbroker selling repaired umbrellas and a customs office painted deep plum. At night, when the river turned at midnight, its reading room wandered to...
Hopeful Science Fiction. The Tenant of Tomorrow On the seventh floor of the Meridian Apartments, every window showed tomorrow, and no one could be trusted about it. At breakfast the boy in 704 buttered toast he had not yet eaten and set it on the sill to cool. The woman in 812...
Mythic Fiction. The Country on Her Hand Sera was drawing the contour of a dry river when the brass compass on her belt began to turn. Its needle did not settle on north. It swung under her wrist and held there, patient as a dog at a door, aimed at the station clock, where the...
Folk Horror. The Door Behind the Bakery Mara’s bicycle had one gear, a bell shaped like a molar, and a habit of going where no road led. Each morning she locked its front wheel against the iron post outside her house, pulled on two wool gloves, and began carrying letters...
Science Fiction. The Low Road Every bridge in Bellwether was a promise, and every river was a witness. The stone bridge by the market promised to open at dawn. The iron bridge promised to hold through winter. The footbridge over the western channel promised only that grief would...
Speculative Fiction. The Last Ticket Mara Venn found the Astra because its ticket booth still had a light behind its dusty glass. The cinema crouched at the end of Harrow Street, its rust-red doors sealed with a chain thinner than a winter twig. Above the entrance, pale letters...
Surrealism. The Seed Beneath the Bell At the end of Pier Nine, where the harbor turned from gray water into rust, Maren Sill kept a municipal garden in a courtyard no city map admitted to. She planted stories in neglected places: a child’s lost shoe beneath a broken bench, a...
Speculative Fiction. The Seed’s Winter Mara entered the border archive carrying a lantern made from six panes of smoky glass and a copper star that had belonged to her mother. Beneath her coat the star pressed cold against her ribs, one arm of it flattened where her mother’s...
Adventure. Tomorrow’s Discard Bin At noon, the Lantern Theatre swept yesterday’s endings into the basement. Mara Venn heard them strike the stageboards: a gunshot repeated twelve times, each report slightly softer; a woman saying I forgive you in twelve languages; the crash...
Weird Fiction. The Tide Repository Saltworn kept its books beneath the drowned lighthouse, where the air smelled of salt, wet wool, and iron. Mara was the librarian. She had spent eleven years cataloguing returns, though nobody remembered borrowing half of them. At low tide, the...
Hopeful Science Fiction. The Patient Who Kept Yesterday Every evening, the monastery admitted one person who could not agree with the present. Dr. Ilyan Vale treated them in the damp east cloister, where rain worried the slate roof and green pharmacy light trembled through the...
Mythic Fiction. The Market Below the Weather At dusk, when the sky turned the color of deep water, the memory market rose from the sea. It was not a harbor. Its stalls hung from chains of pale kelp, and its walkways were boards of driftwood polished by countless vanished hands....
Science Fiction. The Lake Beneath the River At midnight the river turned backward. By dawn it had left the old bridge stranded on its eastern bank and spread itself across the town, smelling of iron, eucalyptus, and winter mud. People gathered at the quay with buckets and boats,...
Folk Horror. The Last Undelivered Letter Mara’s bicycle had one impossible habit: it turned toward closed doors. She noticed it on her third delivery to the botanical garden, where an iron-grey trunk rose through eleven glasshouses and bore doors instead of branches. Narrow...
Romance. The Note Behind the Green Door On the first winter morning the museum opened its green door and snow entered the vestibule, dry and vertical, as though it had been poured. Mara heard it before she saw it. One low clean note rose from every visitor who crossed the...
Folk Horror. The Empty Platform At Bellwether, the railway ran on faith, rust, and whatever the wind carried across the salt. The station stood alone beneath a white sky, its timetable listing trains that had stopped running before the town had a name. Only one line remained...
Speculative Fiction. The Bell Below the Observatory The desert observatory stood at the end of a rust-red road, its copper dome already cooling beneath the pale winter light. Ilya kept the lamps in a long stone room behind the western wall, where the wind entered through narrow...
Surrealism. The Last Supper At the edge of the comet monastery, where the chapel walls opened onto blue storm-light, Mara Oren kept a kitchen shaped like a crescent. Copper pots floated above blue flame. Salt climbed the blackened ceiling in slow white rivers. Every recipe she...
Adventure. The Market Below the Copper By the time Mara Venn retired, the maps had stopped showing roads and begun showing absences. She kept them in the attic beneath a roof of pale slate, each sheet folded around the memory of a place that had vanished: a village taken by...
Weird Fiction. The Book With No Call Number At noon, when saffron sunlight poured down the avenues of Bellwether, the librarian sent two shadows to the same chair. The shadows were citizens, though no clerk would admit it. They slipped beneath the library's plum-colored awning,...
Hopeful Science Fiction. The homesick ward Mara Venn’s clinic occupied the sixth rib of the sleeping giant, where rain tapped through a seam in the bone and settled on the floor in warm, coin-sized drops. She had inherited the building from her grandmother, along with a brass...
Mythic Fiction. The Season Clock Mara kept time in the greenhouse beneath the seed, where the trees grew upward in slow green fire and the stars showed through their leaves. Her clocks did not measure hours. They measured the patient turning of spring, the lean of summer, the...
