Magical Realism. The Weather Ledger On the coldest night at Vey Station, the platforms shone with a winter that had never quite arrived. Frost silvered the iron rails, though the departure board promised April, mango season, and a thunderstorm in November. Passengers waited...

Science Fiction. The tide-bearer Every morning, when the desert heat withdrew into the eucalyptus trees, Mara tied her glass bird to the stern of her skiff and waited for the lake to appear. It arrived without water rising. A silver basin unfolded between the dunes, its shore...
Speculative Fiction. The Note Under the Ice Every bridge in Bellwether was a promise, and every river was a witness. The footbridge over Mire Creek carried a widow's vow to return. The stone arch at Lantern Street held a merchant's promise to pay honest wages. Even the narrow...
Surrealism. The Courtyard of Unfinished Sentences At the bottom of the comet monastery, where the stone walls curved inward like the inside of a bell, Mara Venn planted stories in neglected courtyards. She worked with a silver trowel, a watering can filled with rainwater, and...
Weird Fiction. The Suitcase of Small Histories Mara was seven when the shadows learned to vote. They gathered beneath the awnings of Vellum, wearing the outlines of coats, carts, dogs, and men who had forgotten they were being followed. Citizens carried them from door to door,...
Hopeful Science Fiction. The Door That Wasn’t There Mara slept beneath the village inside the giant’s ribs, where rain ticked through the bone-roofs and every morning smelled of wet asphalt, lavender soap, and the green glow leaking from the pharmacy sign outside. She had...
Weird Fiction. The Last Screening The Orpheum had closed for thirty-seven years, but its marquee still flickered whenever the saffron afternoon tilted toward plum. Mara found the cinema on the first day of her new job, seated behind a desk in a lobby whose carpets had forgotten...
Hopeful Science Fiction. The Patient at the End of the World Dr. Iona Vale kept the lighthouse on the whale’s back, though neither the lighthouse nor the whale could be called still. The whale slept beneath the sea, a vast iron body carrying a tower of green glass. At night,...
Magical Realism. The Seed’s Sleeping Room On the night the greenhouse forgot its orbit, Mara found a red door inside the seed vault. It had no handle, no hinges, no number. Its paint was the only red aboard the station, a narrow flame in the pearl light of the hydroponic...
