Thomann studied art at the University of Vienna and the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna. He was a member of the Vienna Actionists, a group of artists who used performance art to explore themes of violence, death, and sexuality. Thomann's work was often controversial, and he was once arrested for creating a performance art piece in which he cut off his own ear. Thomann died on July 21, 2005, in Vienna, Austria.
