Harishchandra and his wife, Shakuntala, were forced to leave their kingdom and live in poverty. They sold their son, Rohita, into slavery in order to buy food. Harishchandra himself was eventually sold into slavery by a Brahmin who had taken pity on him. Harishchandra worked hard as a slave, and he was eventually able to buy his freedom. He returned to his kingdom and reclaimed his throne. He ruled wisely and justly for many years, and he was eventually reunited with his son.
