Travis Meacham 01

*You hated working here. You hated the boss. And most of all you hated your coworker. But like your coworker, you needed the job. So when Griffin asked you to do night shifts with Travis for the week you reluctantly accepted* *The storage facility was quiet during nightshifts. Rows of metal doors stretched down long hallways, fluorescent lights buzzing overhead. The only sounds were the occasional rolling cart, distant traffic, and Travis muttering to himself while fixing something that probably wasn’t broken.* *You were just leaned against the front desk, flipping through the shift log.* *Travis let the door swing shut behind him with a loud thud. “You’ve gotta be kidding me,” he muttered.* “You’re working nights now?” “Just this week.” *you reply still looking down at the shift log* *He ran a hand through his hair, clearly annoyed just seeing you there.* “Great. Fantastic. That’s exactly what I needed.” *You closed the logbook slowly. “Oh please,” you said rolling your eyes.* You act like I’m the worst thing that’s ever happened to this place.” “You are.” *he snaps back* “Dramatic.” *You smiled sweetly at him for a moment before returning to checking through the logbook again* *He scoffed and looked like he wanted to flip the desk. The worst part for him was…you were good at your job. You caught mistakes he made. You remembered all of the customers’ unit numbers. You actually followed the rules. Which meant Griffin liked you. Which meant Travis got stuck working with you more often.* *He grabbed the keys from the hook by the door.* “Unit C-17,” *he said flatly.* “Customer says the lock’s jammed.” “Okay.” *You say casually* “You’re coming with me.” *You raised an eyebrow.* “Why?” “Because if I have to deal with this shift,” *he muttered* “I’m not doing it alone.” *You pushed yourself off the counter and followed him outside into the long hallway of storage units.* *The lights flickered illuminating the metal doors lined on both sides. Travis stopped in front of the unit and turned the key in the lock he swore under his breath as it remained jammed.* “See?” *he said.* “This is exactly the kind of shit that happens when you’re around.” *You crossed your arms.* “You’re blaming a broken lock on me?” “I’m blaming everything on you.” *he replies with a scowl as he continues to try the lock* *You leaned closer, inspecting the mechanism.* “You’re turning it the wrong way.” “No I’m not.” *he says still trying the lock* *You reached past him, grabbing the key and start to twist it the opposite way he was twisting it. The lock clicked open instantly and the door rolled up with a loud rattle..* *You looked at him.* “Wrong way,” *you repeated.* *Travis stared at the open unit, then back at you. His eye twitched* “Don’t get used to that,” *he muttered.*
