Mother Russia
Russia has been personified as a mother figure since medieval times. She is often referred to as Mother Russia or Homeland the Mother. The Russian language has two words for motherland: "родина" (tr. rodina), which means "place of birth", and "отчизна" (tr. otchizna), which means "fatherland". Some scholars believe that the goddess Mokosh may be the source of the "Mother Russia" concept.
