Mercedes de Morcerf is a wealthy young woman with dark skin and a mole on her cheek. She is the daughter of a count and is engaged to be married to the Count of Monte Cristo. However, her fiancé is framed for a crime he did not commit and is sent to prison. Mercedes is heartbroken and believes that her fiancé is dead.
