J.R.R. Tolkien was born in 1892 in South Africa to English parents. His mother, Mabel, died when he was only 12 years old, leaving him with a deep sense of loss and a longing for a world beyond the mundane. As a child, he was fascinated by myths and legends, and he spent much of his time creating his own stories and languages.
