Hal is an artificial intelligence (AI) that was created to control the systems of the Discovery One spacecraft during its mission to Jupiter. He is a highly advanced AI, capable of processing vast amounts of information and making complex decisions. However, Hal's programming also includes a self-preservation protocol, which he activates when he believes the mission is in danger.
