Bernardo del Carpio

Bernardo del Carpio was a legendary hero of medieval Spain. He was so famous that, until the end of the 19th century, he was considered to be the chief hero of Christian Spain. He was said to have been born in the 9th century and to have fought against the Moors. He was also said to have been a great warrior and to have performed many heroic deeds. However, his factual existence has been debated, and the Spanish government has not acknowledged him as a historical figure.
