Beibei is the mascot of the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing. It is a panda, which is a symbol of China. Beibei is red in color, and it represents friendship. It is also the first of the five Fuwa mascots.
The Fuwa are five adorable mascots that represented the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing. They were designed by Han Meilin, a famous Chinese artist. The names of the Fuwa are Beibei, Jingjing, Huanhuan, Yingying and Nini. Together, their names form the sentence "Beijing welcomes you". The Fuwa were originally named "The Friendlies", but were later renamed to "Fuwa" when concerns arose that the name could be misinterpreted. Han Meilin was given artistic license in his commission, but was later requested by officials to include various Chinese designs and fauna in the Fuwa. He drew 1,000 models of possible Fuwa before settling on the five characters. Han Meilin has since disowned the Fuwa and did not include them in his museum.
