Befana
The Befana is an old woman who delivers gifts to children throughout Italy on Epiphany Eve (the night of January 5). She is said to ride a broomstick through the air, wearing a black shawl and is covered in soot because she enters the children's houses through the chimney. She is often smiling and carries a bag or hamper filled with candy, gifts, or both.
If you've been good, the Befana will fill your socks with goodies. But if you've been bad, you might get a lump of coal or a stick in your stocking.
The Befana is a beloved figure in Italian folklore, and she is celebrated with parties and festivities on Epiphany Eve. She is a reminder that even though the holiday season is over, there is still joy to be found in the new year.
