In the 1800s, America was a land of opportunity and adventure. Men flocked westward, seeking their fortunes in the vast prairies and forests. They built homesteads, tamed the wilderness, and plied the rivers in search of riches. But for women, the westward expansion was a different story.

Vast forests stand tall, their emerald canopies embracing the skies. Open prairies stretch as far as the eye can see; rustic homesteads dot the landscape, their chimney smoke mingling with the fragrance of freshly plowed earth. Along the great rivers, paddlewheel boats chug and churn, carrying people and dreams down winding waterways. The promise of the west beckons, promising opportunity. Not if you’re a woman, however.
