Content notice — MATURE

MATURE. Adults only. Every named and speaking character is an adult with an age on the page: Ilse Ravn 47, Yannick Osei 42, Ingrid Sundvik 56, Tomas Berg 58, Nadia Okonjo 33, Kasper Lie 34, Ruairi Docherty 45, Petra Lindqvist 29, Bruna Teixeira 38, Bendik Aarseth 51. The youngest is 29. No minor appears in any role, memory, photograph, joke, plan, or future reference. Themes: a 9 MW fast reactor with 456 hours of fuel and a certified envelope of ten thermal suspensions, eight of which are spent. A replacement core cancelled ninety minutes out over the telephone. A whiteboard on the port bulkhead carrying the fuel hours in one column, the suspension count in the second, and a rationed list of nights in the third. A field lost to a vibration figure of 4.1 per cent against an allowable of 2.8. A written and explicit sexual encounter between two consenting adults at twenty past four in the morning, inside that argument, and it is never a reward: in the same chapter the fuel column is re-marked, the ninth suspension is moved, and one branch of the ration menu strikes through a night that had been scheduled. Nobody in this novel lies to anybody. The certified count of ten, the eight already spent, the cancelled core, and the field's loss are all said out loud in the room, in numbers, in the first two days. There is no hidden betrayal, nothing for the reader to piece together, and no second reading of any document that changes its meaning. The damage is done by two accurate people who are both, at every moment, trying to do the job. The Ravn Field is suspended production in all five endings and no ending undoes that. There is no death, no injury, and no violence that lands. The worst things that happen are a reactor's certified envelope, a field's production, and a list on a wall. Content warnings: a workplace ration of intimacy, an explicit adult encounter between two colleagues aboard a remote platform, a professional relationship destroyed between two people who were both good at the job, the loss of a shared project, institutional indifference expressed as procedure, and a hard choice with no option that costs nothing. No slurs are written out. Bigotry appears only as a background assumption about a foreign crew and is shown only through what people do with it. Halvard B, the Ravn Field, the Kell-9, the Kell-10, Nordvind Energy AS, Kestrel 2000, Aker Construction, the MV Anemone and the MV Lerøy are invented. No real company, no real reactor, no real person, no recognisable place on Earth. All music is instrumental; there is no voice acting.
