MATURE. Every named character is an adult: Sanna Redfern 41, Ceri Napier 45, Tristram Sowerby 58, Margo Sennen 51, Dafydd Llewellyn 33, Elena Marchetti 61, Barry Trewin 24, David Pryce 47, Guto Pethick 44, Marta Rowe 31, and Rees 34. No minor appears in any role. The story contains a site log whose fault column has been written by one person and countersigned by another three hundred and forty times, a fitness-for-duty return written in a hotel car park in Newquay on the sixth of March, and a machine under sixty-one metres of water that has been recording a room since 1976. The sexual content is explicit and written between two consenting adults who say the consent out loud in the room before anything happens, on the fortieth night of a ninety-day rotation, in a cold loft, on eleven feet of bed space; it is never a reward, and the morning after it costs one of them the use of her right arm and puts the document the whole novel is about on the breakfast table. Nobody in this story is a monster and nobody lies about anything except one line in one book, which is said out loud in the room in the first hour. There is no hidden betrayal and nothing for the reader to piece together: the mechanism is a seawater-activated cell, a programme clock that loses four minutes a year, and eight hundred and twenty one metres of six point three five millimetre tape at nine point five centimetres a second, which is twenty-four hours. No slurs are written out, no weapon is described and no intrusive method is explained. Belver Head, the Braefoot gallery, Trelissick Renewables, Halden and every person in this story are invented. All music is instrumental; there is no voice acting. No media is generated, fetched or bundled with this project.
