MATURE. Every named and speaking character is an adult with an age on the page; the youngest is 34. No minor appears in any role, memory, photograph, joke, announcement, plan, or future reference. Themes: a man returned from four years he cannot remember into a marriage that has already survived them; a wife rationing four years of her own life and handing them back one item a week in an order she alone sets; a joint account overdrawn to four thousand one hundred and eighty pounds; a scar with two stitch lines; seventy-one thousand four hundred and six pounds in a jar that built a milking parlour; a man who sat behind a stroke for ninety-one minutes before he picked up a telephone; a machine nobody can aim; a form with a date printed in the corner; and a signature on a two-page deed on a Tuesday with no occasion, in a hand that did not shake. Sexual content is written in full between two married adults, is negotiated out loud, and stops on a spoken word before it is written in full; it is the most exposing act in the novel and it is used, in the room, as the last instrument of the coercion, and it is followed by twenty-six hours of silence. Nobody dies on the page. No method of injury, of self-harm, or of entry into a building is described. No slur is written. No media is generated, fetched, or bundled with this project.
