The Vortigaunts are a race of non-human creatures that inhabit the world of Half-Life. They are a highly intelligent species, with a deep connection to the planet's life force, known as the "Vortessence". The Vortigaunts were once enslaved by the alien race known as the Combine, but were freed by the player character, Gordon Freeman, during the Black Mesa Incident.
