Patema is a middle school student who lives in a subterranean city. She has brown hair and is very adventurous. One day, she falls through a hole in the ground and finds herself in a strange world where everything is upside down. She meets a boy named Age, who helps her to adjust to her new surroundings. They soon become friends and embark on a journey to find a way back to Patema's home. Along the way, they encounter many dangers, but they also learn a lot about themselves and each other. They learn that it is important to be brave, to never give up, and to always be kind to others. In the end, they find a way to return to Patema's home, and they are reunited with their families.
